Marion K. Holmes Memorial Summer Reading Program


Six weeks of summer programming for kids; held Thursdays at 1:00pm, July 3-August 7.

Thursday, July 3rd @ 1p.m. – Vermont PuppeTree performs Swimmy and The Swimmer to kick off our summer reading program, Alstead Reads! Find more information on Vermont PuppeTree at

Thursday, July 10th @ 1p.m. – The Story of Chocolate with Anna Petrova of the Mariposa Museum.Join us as we examine a living cacao tree, enjoy a Mayan legend about the theft of chocolate from paradise, take part in a chocolate-making demonstration and create a paper craft illustrating the origins of your favorite chocolate treat. Parents and older kids are invited to learn where the cacao tree grows, how the beans are processed, and what the “organic” and “fair-trade” designations mean in the world of cocoa. Kids will leave knowing that chocolate really does grow on trees!

Thursday, July 17th @ 1p.m. – JamboRead with Willy! Join local musician Willy Buchan on a musical adventure for the whole family.

Thursday, July 24th @ 1p.m. – Make a Book with Jessi. Read a book, make a book, take a book home!

Thursday, July 31st @ 1p.m. – Raptor Encounters with VINSWildlife – Live falcons, hawks and owls provide the lens through which we examine food webs, predator-prey relationships and the interdependence of the systems that support life. Find out about the Vt. Institute of Natural Science at

Thursday, August 7th @ 1p.m. – Ice Cream Party for reading program participants. Come celebrate your summer reading success at the library!

All events are free and open to the public, but children must be pre-registered in the reading program to be eligible for weekly reading prizes.
